Emotional freedom. Two words – endless possibilities. What would you do or become if you had emotional freedom? Today we’re looking at an amazing new (to us) tool, known as Emotional Freedom Technique and how it can free us from any emotional obstacles that block us from living life unbound.
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is also known as “tapping,” since it combines gentle tapping on acupressure points with cognitive behavioral (talk) therapy. Combining ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology, you can go from a place of extreme negative emotion to calm inspiration in minutes. Believe me, I don’t get paid to tell you this… but it can really work.
One night, while we were out to dinner, friends told us that they use it in their work as diversity workshop facilitators and I asked for a demonstration, which didn’t yield much of a result, since I felt fantastic after a delicious micro-brew and good company. However, life has a way of bringing helpful tools across our path continuously, until we respond, which I finally did. I found a book on the topic and then I came across various helpful, insightful videos.
After trying tapping for the first time, shifting my emotions from extreme (level 10 severity) to a level 4 (mild) in 10 minutes, I was sold.
I don’t know about you, but I tend to find something I really want, and when it manifests (along with aspects I didn’t quite anticipate), I tend to become rather overwhelmed. The last thing you want to do when you receive fantastic news, is to ruin it by honing in on aspects that make you feel overwhelmed, guilty, or anxious. So when that happened, I took my yoga mat and headed outside for a good tapping session (no – it involves no stretching!) after which I felt fantastic.
How Emotional Freedom Technique Works
EFT has been featured on many medical and talk shows, in magazines, and in books. It has been studied by Harvard University and you can learn more about the science on the Tapping Solution website.
At the very base of it, the tapping process (which you can do on your own, without a practitioner or therapist) has three elements:
1. Identifying Your Issue
Strong emotions can hamper you from feeling your best. It can also prevent you from finding solutions by causing you to “freeze up.” The first step is to identify the strong emotion that you want to work on and rating it according to its intensity. At level 1, it doesn’t bother you much at all; level 5 is moderate and at level 10, it is severe.
Emotional freedom is achieved through identifying and acknowledging how you feel, rather than bottling it up and trying to “be positive.” Once you have rated your level of discomfort, you will take a few deep breaths before moving on to the next step.
2. Let it Out
One of the main reasons why we struggle to move away from negative emotions, is that we don’t talk about it. EFT provides a safe place for talking about how we feel while you work through the meridian points. As you gently tap on the karate chop point, followed by the eyebrow and other points, you will talk about exactly how you feel. Don’t worry about strong suppressed emotions that come up – that only means that you’re doing it right. Talk them all out!
Since you can do EFT all by yourself, you don’t have to worry about what anyone might think. Simply lock the door, give the neighbors earplugs, and go crazy if you have to. (Just kidding, but on a serious note, if you are dealing with extremely strong emotions that make you feel fearful, homicidal or suicidal, rather work with a trained practitioner.)
As you talk about how you feel, you will start feeling a sense of relief wash over you. That’s when you can start ‘tapping in’ the positive emotions, and affirming them through a series of taps. Take a deep breath and assess your emotional level of intensity after every cycle. Keep going until you get down to a level 4 or lower.

It’s actually really simple. It’s about getting back to basics: talking and getting in touch with your body’s energy. And it holds incredible potential. You can use it to improve emotional and physical conditions, lose weight, and manifest wonderful things into your existence.
