There are three types of work: a job that pays the bills, a job that feeds your soul, and the type that is just a part of your day-to-day living. I think that, while those three are pretty much one and the same to different people, the job you choose makes a big difference to how you experience life. I believe it is a matter of perspective.
When someone asks you whether you enjoy your job, how do you answer?
- It pays the bills.
- Yeah, it's okay.
- No, I hate it.
- I love it!
Your answer can clearly tell you whether you have the right perspective on your job. What's the right perspective, you ask?
Most of us are not born millionaires and we have to work to earn a living. But it's what me make of it, that matters. Work should not be a drag. It should be a blessing. We spend a lot of time at work and when we can make a difference while we're at it, it becomes a joy.
When the line between WORK and LIFE becomes blurred and we start living life unbound by those boundaries – that's when life becomes pleasurable.
You may wonder how you can make your work life enjoyable, and as always, we have some suggestions:
1. Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life. ~ Confucius
Easier said than done? Perhaps, but it is worth some investigation. Sometimes, it takes massive risks and changes to pursue certain goals; if that's the case, take it one step at a time.
I've spoken to so many people who have no idea what they'd love to do and I always suggest that they find something they'd happily do for a long time, around their dream lifestyles. For instance, if you love to travel, but don't have the finances, consider doing volunteer work in different countries. Or, if you would love to be a stay at home mom, but can't quite afford to take your foot off the gas, consider doing something part time, when the kids are at play dates.
It's about working smart, not hard. But always pursue your goals.
2. Every day, there are new problems and new solutions. Sometimes, one solution works and other times other solutions work. ~ Amit Bhatia
Sometimes, turning a passion into a job can take the joy out of it. An amazing part time venture can quickly turn into a painful experience when it becomes full time.
It's important to maintain a flexible approach, while being disciplined at the same time.
The best thing about being your own boss, is that you can work on your own schedule. Don't force yourself to adhere to arbitrary timelines. Have a general guideline and work when inspiration strikes, even if it's at midnight.
Most importantly, be sure to throw yourself into pleasure as much (if not more) than into work.
3. Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them – that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like. ~ Lao Tzu
Do whatever you do wholeheartedly. When you work, put your all into it. When you play, do so with all your heart.
Be fully in the moment. Focus on the sensations in everything you do, fully aware, completely in the moment.
The best way to achieve this flow, is to forget about what has happened. Forget about rushing towards what has to still happen and just be in the now. Don't try force situations – just let the current moment unfold naturally.
Remember that life is meant to be enjoyed and our work is meant to be a means to make a difference. Are you making a difference or are you just working?
